U.S. praises soldier for atrocity

World | Monday, March 7th, 2005

A U.S. soldier who shot an unarmed, injured Iraqi civilian in the face and then jumped up and down on the dead man’s spine has been cleared of criminal charges by the U.S. Armed Forces Tribunal.

Video footage of the appalling incident taken by a French documentary crew was submitted to the tribunal by way of evidence. The family of the deceased also gave evidence by video link.

“Sure the footage showed Private Ryan killing an unarmed man. And yes, he did then violate the corpse, but the video evidence was still inconclusive,” a tribunal spokesperson said.

“The fact that the Marine Corps added a funny voiceover and zany sound effects to the footage really took away from the horror of what we were watching,” the spokesperson said.

“Blam! Splat! Lucky I’m wearing this towel on my head to mop up my brains!’ Boing! Whoever put this clip together is a comedy genius,” the spokesperson said.

After the charges were dropped by the Tribunal, Private Jones was informed that he had also won a handycam on America’s Funniest Iraqi Invasion Videos.
