Punk single released straight to ringtone

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN!In an unprecendented move, unsigned Australian punk band Rank Defile’s first release has bypassed the traditional single-pressing, airplay and launch process and been posted directly as a mobile phone ringtone to various web-based providers.

“It’s a really exciting stage we’re at with technology,” said Darren Alvares yesterday.

“We can cut out the middle-men and directly achieve the end product of a song’s life, and all from the comfort of our own home, without lining the pockets of the corporate fat-cats!”

Alvares, co-author of the song Dead-ucation with bandmates Clare “Scissor Kiss” Golub and Max “Load” Heather, handled the phone programming of the song, struggling with the medium’s limited polyphonic capabilities and the clumsy music composition tool in his Nokia to create what he believes is a “hauntingly bitter kicking against the pricks of formal education” that will “reach from the pocket and touch the soul of disillusioned youth everywhere”.

“To craft from a feeling, to focus your hate and rage and transport it lovingly to 4-bit, 4-note polyphony in a way which both flatters and enhances the original, some would call a challenge.

“But to me, the mobile phone is just another tool in the punk’s box. I could comfortably say that if GG Allin was with us today, he would have embraced the technology openly,” assured Alvares enthusiastically.

Alvares flatly denies claims that the band have been forced into this position as a result of numerous rejections from major, independent and even insignificant experimental labels over the course of the band’s existence, and a dramatic lack of self-funding.

And the verdict? We took to the streets to find out what people though of Dead-ucation:

  • “Is it that thing Kenny G did with Peabo whats-his-name?”- Lance Weakes, 29.
  • “It sounds like the middle bit of Led Zeppelin’s When the Levee Breaks… But that scraping sound makes it hard to tell.”- Paul Burnes, 31.
  • “I’m not sure what that is, but I don’t think I’d buy it. Is that a buzzing sort of sound? I don’t like that buzzing sound at all,” winced Julianne Staff, 22.
  • “It’s like the start of Party Enema by NOFX, but just the first three notes repeated over and over.. and that insidious rattling cymbal sound. Sweet damn that’s awful,” said Erik Casner, 18.
